Grief counseling for miscarriage, IVF loss, stillbirth, and pregnancy complications across Idaho

You’re lying on the couch at 5pm, and you can hear your husband in the other room trying to figure out dinner. You should get up. You should eat something. You should return your sister’s call. But you’ve been staring at the same spot on the ceiling since you got home from the appointment where the doctor confirmed what you already knew from the blood work: this round didn’t take either. The fourth one. And this time, you can’t even make yourself cry about it, which somehow feels worse than the crying did.

Or maybe your loss was different. Maybe you were eighteen weeks along and already showing when you started bleeding at work. By the time you got to the hospital, you already knew. You spent three days recovering, and then you went back to work because nobody there even knew you were pregnant, and now you sit through Monday morning meetings wondering if anyone can tell that you’re completely heartbroken.

Or maybe you got the results at your twenty-week anatomy scan, the one where the doctor was quiet for too long before saying something about anomalies. And then came a series of conversations that no one should ever have to have, followed by a decision that Idaho law has made impossibly complicated. You may have had to leave the state for care, driving or flying to another city while carrying grief and a pregnancy at the same time. You came home afterward, and now you’re trying to find someone who can help you process what just happened.

Whatever brought you here, the grief you’re dealing with is specific. The therapy you need has to be specific, too.

I'm Summer Verhines. I'm a licensed clinical social worker with telehealth registration in Idaho (#9371387), and I provide online therapy to people across the state who are living with infertility grief, pregnancy loss, and the trauma that follows. I work with clients in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Eagle, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and every other community in Idaho through secure video sessions.

The grief of infertility and pregnancy loss

You’ve probably tried to deal with this on your own. You went back to work, told yourself to stay strong, scrolled through forums late at night looking for someone whose story sounded like yours.

Maybe you tried therapy. Your therapist was kind, and you liked them, but the sessions felt like talking in circles. You’d describe what happened, they’d reflect it back, and you’d leave feeling heard but not different. The nightmares didn’t stop, the tension in your body didn’t let up, and you still dreaded every Monday morning where someone might ask how your weekend was.

That’s because this kind of grief often goes deeper than what talk therapy can reach. The hormone injections, the failed cycles, the phone calls that start with “I’m sorry,” the physical experience of miscarriage or stillbirth, all of that registers in your nervous system. Your body learned that hope is dangerous, and now it’s stuck in protection mode.

If your loss involved a fatal fetal diagnosis, you may have had to leave Idaho for care, driving to Portland or Seattle while carrying a pregnancy and grief at the same time, and then come home afterward with no one to help you process what just happened. That kind of layered trauma needs more than talk therapy can offer.

Body-based trauma therapy, the kind I use, works with the nervous system directly instead of asking you to think your way through it. The grief doesn’t disappear, but it stops controlling your body, your sleep, your ability to function, and your interest in the life you have right now.

Online infertility and pregnancy loss therapy across Idaho

You can work with me from your home in Coeur d’Alene or your office in Idaho Falls or wherever you have a private space and an internet connection. You don’t have to drive to Boise, and you don’t have to rearrange your whole day around an appointment.

If you’re in the middle of fertility treatment, your schedule is already packed with monitoring appointments and medication timing. Online sessions mean you can have therapy from your living room on a day when getting dressed and driving feels like too much.

If you’ve just experienced a loss, you don’t have to sit in a waiting room next to someone who might be pregnant.

If your loss involved out-of-state travel for care, privacy matters, and telehealth gives you that.

I provide infertility and pregnancy loss therapy to Idaho residents throughout the state through secure telehealth.

Summer Verhines, LCSW, Idaho pregnancy loss therapist

I'm Summer Verhines, LCSW (Idaho Telehealth Registration #9371387).

Before becoming a therapist, I spent nine years working in child welfare and adoption. That work gave me a close-up view of how our experiences show up in the body, not just the mind, which is why standard talk therapy alone often doesn’t bring the long-term healing clients are looking for.

That led me to specialize in body-based approaches: EMDR, Brainspotting, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). These work directly with how your brain and nervous system stored the experience and help your body stop reacting as if the crisis is still happening.

I work with people navigating IVF, miscarriage, stillbirth, TFMR, and the layered grief that comes when several of these happen in sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most therapists have basic grief training. What many don’t have is training in how reproductive trauma affects the body and nervous system.

A generalist might help you talk through your feelings about a miscarriage, but the tightness in your chest, the nightmares, or the way you flinch during medical appointments are trauma responses that need trauma treatment.

  • It depends on your situation. Some clients with a single, defined loss make significant progress in 8 to 12 sessions: sleeping through the night, attending social events without spiraling, making decisions about next steps with clarity. Others come in with years of accumulated infertility trauma, multiple losses, or layered grief that includes travel for out-of-state care, and the work takes six months to a year. Longer treatment isn't a sign of being stuck. Each layer you process frees up more of your daily life.

  • They’re different from traditional talk therapy. Instead of narrating your experience in detail, you focus on a specific memory or sensation while I guide your brain through a processing technique, which might involve eye movements, focused attention on a body sensation, or guided visualization.

Most clients describe it as feeling like the memory is still there afterward, but the emotional intensity has dropped. You can think about what happened without your whole body reacting.

  • The first session is about understanding your full picture. I'll ask about your history and how the loss or infertility is affecting your daily life right now: your sleep, your relationship, physical symptoms like jaw clenching or stomach pain. I'm listening for how the trauma is showing up in your body and routines, because that tells me where to focus. You don't have to share every detail in the first session if you're not ready.

  • Many of my clients come to me after multiple types of loss. Maybe you went through several IVF cycles, then miscarried, then received a devastating diagnosis that led to travel out of state for care. Or maybe you experienced a stillbirth after years of treatment and now you're weighing whether to try again. I work with layered loss regularly. We don't process everything at once. We work through it piece by piece, and each piece that resolves gives you more capacity for the rest.

  • I charge $250 per session. I'm a private-pay practice, which means I don't bill insurance directly. I provide superbills, detailed receipts you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. The amount you are reimbursed depends on your specific plan. I'd recommend calling the number on your insurance card and asking about out-of-network mental health benefits before your first session.

  • I’m licensed in California, Maryland, and Idaho, and all sessions are online.
